& many more...

then: since 1992, jeff automatic has been an inspired and often ground-breaking part

of london's club scene.

in the days when the capital's clubbing was dominated by both sorts of music - house AND garage - jeff

started automatic, just near the bright lights of leicester square. the night's refreshing approach to

then-unfashionable guitar tunes attracted upcoming stars of the scene (some of which djed, including

blur) but, mostly - and importantly - enthusiastic, dancing people. it also gave a certain erol alkan his

first warm-up djing break...

that set the standard (the guardian guide called it "hugely underrated") and, in '93, jeff went on to create

planet of sound, london's first non-dance all-nighter, at the 1500-capacity bagley's warehouse. that led,

from '94-'96, to the inspired, monthly club x all-nighters at the astoria & la2, followed (when venue

management demanded the club x name from him, with menaces) by the even-bigger, three-room,

triple-x all-nighters at brixton academy and the rocket, in '97.

jeff then promoted & djed sputnik at the monarch/barfly, on fridays from '97-'03. regularly recommended

in time out, "club of the week" in both hot tickets ("it is [a] determination not to conform that makes

sputnik such fun...") & nme ("a boozy mix of... breakbeats & new indie... as ever, unmissable."), sputnik

played breaks, beats, mixes & blisteringly-new indie with equal abandon. amongst its many guest djs

were soulwax, playing their second-ever london dj set, even as people still queued outside...

meanwhile, jeff also did regular slots at the legendary wag club's cigarettes & alcohol ("a gem of a club.

the anything-goes music policy seems to extend to the crowd. beware booze, late-night snogs and

women with mischief on their minds" - hot tickets), casino royale ("clubland royalty" - time out) and other

uk nights such as brighton's original rockers and venues as diverse as the dogstar, scala, powerhaus,

hammersmith palais, forum...

there have also been uk festival appearances, notably in the phoenix festival's 'second stage' tent for 2

years, where guerilla-flyposting each time ensured a capacity crowd and an encore after the official

curfew, plus a set at a volkswagen beetle festival!

but it's not just the uk... since '93, jeff has been around europe - italy, spain, denmark, germany - to spin

tunes. in italy, he had a long-running slot at xplosiva - one of italy's top 5 "leftfield" dance nights, with

other guests such as jeff mills, in spain, he's done the balearic thing in palma, notoriously ending his set

at '02's isladencanta festival (other artists included oasis, david holmes, tiga...) by setting the decks on

fire!
